Daily Current Affairs Updates: 14th November 2014

1) Jawaharlal Nehru remembered on his 125th birth anniversary:  President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice President Hamid Ansari and top leaders paid rich tributes to country's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on his 125th birth anniversary. He was the the first Prime Minister of Independent India. The day is also celebrated as Children's Day. The day is observed on Nehru’s birthday to showcase his love for children and he is also regarded as Chacha Nehru for children.

2) N. Srinivasan, Meiyappan, Raj Kundra, Sundar Raman named in IPL scam report: The Supreme Court on 14 Nov 2014 disclosed the names of Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra and former Indian Premier League CEO Sundar Raman among 13 who were investigated by the court-appointed inquiry panel for corruption in the cash-rich T20 competition. So far, the court had revealed the names of BCCI president-in-exile N. Srinivasan and his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan. All four will be served notices to explain their standpoint.

3) India third largest passport issuing country: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Friday said that India is the third largest passport issuing country after China and the US. "India accounts for 14 per cent of passport issuance and is the third largest passport issuing country after China and the US, with over 5.7 crore passports users in the country," Swaraj said at the inaugural function of a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) in Shillong in her recorded speech as her helicopter could not land in the city due to bad weather.

4) India successfully test-fires nuclear-capable Prithvi-II missile: India on 14 Nov 2014 successfully test-fired its indigenously developed nuclear-capable Prithvi-II surface-to-surface missile, which has a strike range of 350 km, from a test range at Chandipur as part of a user trial by Army. Defence sources said the state-of-the-art missile, which is capable of carrying 500 kg to 1000 kg of warheads, was test-fired from a mobile launcher in salvo mode from launch complex-3 of Integrated Test Range at about 10.40 hrs.

5) Rajya Sabha Question Hour shifted to noon: With an aim to ensure its smooth and effective functioning, the Rajya Sabha will have its Question Hour at 12 noon from the winter session of Parliament which begins on November 24. The Question Hour in Rajya Sabha will now be between 12 PM to 1 PM instead of 11 AM to 12 PM in the winter session, a senior Parliamentary Affairs Ministry official said. 

6) Mitchell Johnson named ICC Cricketer of the Year: It was double delight for Mitchell Johnson as the Australian fast bowler was on Friday declared ICC Cricketer of the Year as well as the ICC Test cricketer of the Year. The 33-year-old has won the coveted Cricketer of the Year award for the second time in his career while he is only third Australian after Ricky Ponting (2006) and Michael Clarke (2013) to win the Test Cricketer of the Year award. Johnson has been joined on the winners' list by South Africa's AB de Villiers, who was named ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year, and England's Gary Ballance, who claimed his first-ever ICC award after being named the ICC Emerging Cricketer of the Year. Richard Kettleborough of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires won the David Shepherd Trophy for ICC Umpire of the Year for the second consecutive year.

7) World Diabetes Day observed on 14 November: World Diabetes Daywas observed on 14 November 2013 across the world to raise awareness of diabetes-a chronic disease. World Diabetes Day is an annual campaign, led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and its member associations. It engages millions of people worldwide in diabetes advocacy and awareness.

8) Maneka Gandhi launches Bal Swachhata Abhiyan on Children's Day: Union Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi launched Bal Swachhata Abhiyan in the national capital on 14 Nov 2014.  The campaign is as part of the government's nationwide mission. On Nov 14, the theme was 'clean school'. On November 15, the theme would be 'clean food' and students would bring home-made food for the lunch and will not consume any junk food. On November 17, theme of schools would be 'clean self, personal hygiene and child health'. On November 18, the theme would be 'clean drinking water' while on November 19, the focus would on clean toilets.
