• The five recognized Nuclear Powers (United States, Russia, China, Britain and France) signed a treaty to create a 'nuclear free zone' in 5 central Asian countries namely Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.  
  • The deal prohibits production, purchase and placement of nuclear weapons on the above mentioned territories however, allowing peaceful use of nuclear energy.
  • These five countries already have a Central Asian Nuclear-Weapon-Free-Zone (CANWFZ) Treaty among them that says no to manufacturing, acquiring, testing, or possessing nuclear weapons. This will be the 5th nuclear-weapons-free zone in the world after the following four..
  1. Latin America and the Caribbean - by Treaties of Tlatelolco
  2. South Pacific – by Treaty of Rarotonga
  3. Southeast Asia – by Treaty of Bangkok  
  4. Africa (need two more ratifications to come into force) – by Treaty of Pelindaba
• Historian and political scientist Luis Guillermo Solis has been sworn in as 47th President of Costa Rica.  
  • He beats Johnny Araya in run-off election with astounding 78 percent approval.
  • Costa Rica is a tiny Central American country with population of just 4.5 million.
  • He succeeds Laura Chinchilla as such.
• Ronnie O'Sullivan has been crowned World Snooker Player of the Year.  
  • The five-time world snooker champion was recently stunned by Mark Selby at the Dafabet World Championship.
  • Ding Jun Hui won the snooker writers' Player of the Year award.
• Nation to observe National Technology Day 2014 on May 11.  
  • It marks multiple technological breakthrough achieved on the day like Pokhran nuclear tests in 1998, test-flight of our first indigenous aircraft "Hansa-3" and successful test firing of the Trishul missile.
  • The occasion also honours technological innovations and their successful Commercialization.
• Two Indian-Americans Manjusha P Kulkarni and Ranjana Paintal are to be honoured with 'Champions of Change' by the White House.  
  • The White House Champions of Change program exemplify and recognize citizens across the country, who are doing extraordinary work in their communities.
• Denesh Ramdin has been appointed as the captain of West Indies for test.
