1) Dilma Rousseff  re-elected as Brazilian President: Left-leaning President Dilma Rousseff was re-elected Sunday in the tightest race Brazil has seen since its return to democracy three decades ago, giving the juggernaut Workers’ Party its fourth-straight presidential victory and the chance to extend its social transformation of the globe’s fifth-largest country. Ms. Rousseff took 51.6 percent of the votes and centre-right challenger Aecio Neves had 48.4 percent, with almost all ballots counted.

2) S Africa football captain Senzo Meyiwa shot dead: South Africa soccer captain Senzo Meyiwa was shot dead by intruders when trying to protect his girlfriend during a robbery at her home near Johannesburg, officials said on Monday. The 27-year-old Orlando Pirates goalkeeper died on Sunday after suffering a single shot through the chest at the home of girlfriend Kelly Khumalo, a local actress and singer, in the township of Vosloorus. "Two guys entered the house and demanded cellphones, money and other valuables," provincial Community Safety official Sizakele Nkosi-Malubane told reporters at the scene.

3) Black money: govt. names industrialists: The Centre on Monday disclosed in the Supreme Court that Pradip Burman of Dabur, Rajkot-based bullion trader Pankaj Chimanlal Lodhiya and Goa-based mining baron Radha Satish Timblo of Timblo Private Ltd. were among those who had stashed black money abroad. Other Directors of Timblo — Chetan S. Timblo, Rohan S. Timblo and Mrs. Mallika R. Timblo were also named in the affidavit, ahead of the hearing on Tuesday. While disclosing these names, the Centre sought modification of the May 1 apex court order to disclose all names of foreign account holders and pleaded that only those names against whom investigations had been completed and prosecution launched, should be disclosed.

5) Serena Williams beats Simona Halep to win WTA Finals: Serena Williams beat Simona Halep 6-3, 6-0 Sunday to win her third-successive title at the WTA Finals - and her fifth overall. Halep easily beat Williams just four days earlier during the group stage of the tournament, but Williams turned that around with an aggressive game plan that unsettled the Romanian player. Williams won 11 of the last 12 games in the match to join Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf as the only players to have won five titles in the season-ending championships.

6) India drops to sixth place in ICC Test rankings: India on Sunday dropped to sixth place in the ICC Test rankings after Pakistan took a 1-0 lead in the ongoing series against Australia. “Pakistan’s victory in the Dubai Test has not only ensured that it will move ahead of India in fifth position irrespective of how the Abu Dhabi Test ends, it has dashed Australia hopes of regaining the number one Test ranking,” the ICC said in a statement.

7) Vigilance Awareness Week from October 27 to November 01, 2014: The Vigilance Awareness Week is being observed this year from October 27, 2014 to November 01, 2014 and this year’s theme is Combating Corruption Technology as an enabler. The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) as the apex integrity institution of the country has been thriving to promote transparency, probity and integrity in public life. One of the outreach measures to promote these values in various Central Government offices and public sector undertakings is the observance of Vigilance Awareness Week every year wherein all the stakeholders are encouraged to fight corruption.

8) BJP government in Maharashtra to be sworn-in on October 31: The swearing-in ceremony of the new BJP government has been postponed by a day due to non-availability of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 30. The new Cabinet of the BJP will take its oath on October 31. The swearing-in ceremony will take place at Wankhede stadium on Friday evening in the presence of the Prime Minister. This is the first oath taking ceremony to be held at the stadium in the recent history of Maharashtra.


9) Vietnam PM Nguyen Tan Dung begins two-day India visit: Highlighting the growing closeness in their ties and the strategic nature of their relationship, Vietnam Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung begins his two-day state visit to India on Monday, the third high-level exchange between the two countries in two months. Prime Minister Dung, who begins his India visit by touching down at Bodh Gaya in Bihar, is accompanied by a 50-member business delegation with economic engagement being top on the agenda of bilateral talks.
