Postal / Sorting Assistant Exam 2014 Syllabus and Preparation Plan

Before going into details, let us ask a question. Why should you apply for this job ? 
Of-course, we can't compare the Postal Assistants job with banking and ssc jobs. But we have enough reasons to apply. The job profile is cool and tension free. You can apply with 10+2 standard or 12th class pass , so no higher qualification required to apply, they don't mind your percentages. You will be posted in your area, so there is no need to leave your home town. There is no negative marking. Last but not the least, the difficulty level of the exam is very easy when compared to bank and other competitive exams. So if you are already have been preparing for banking and other competitive exams, then clearing this exam will be a cake walk for you. Now let's have a look at the exam pattern. 

Postal / Sorting Assistant Exam 2014 Syllabus 

The recruitment exam consists of two papers. Those are
Paper 1 : Aptitude Test
Paper 2 : Computer / Typing Test

Paper 1 - Aptitude Test :

This test is of 100 marks. This test consists of four sections. Each section consists of 25 questions which are of 25 marks. Those are, General Knowledge, Mathematics, Reasoning & Mental Ability and English Grammar. 

Important Points to Note :

  1. Basic knowledge of concepts is enough. But you should practice more.
  2. For banking and other competitive exams, the questions are of +2 level. But for postal assistants exam the difficulty level is of 10th Standard. 
  3. Refer to previous papers (you can get them below this post) before starting your preparation.
  4. You can expect direct questions in this exam. Unline the banking exams, There will be no twisted questions. Some times over thinking may ruin your chances. So keep this in mind while solving questions. 
  5. Now lets have a detailed analysis of the syllabus and preparation Plan. 

General Knowledge Section : 

For this section, you should prepare Current Affairs (last 6 months updates on appointments, deaths, awards, summits etc), Sports, Basic concepts of History, Geography, Economy, Indian Polity and General Science. You can prepare various current affairs magazines, GK books and the books of NCERT. Our Current Affairs and study materials will also help you in preparing this section. 

Mathematics : 

The questions of this section will be of Tenth standard. You should prepare the basics of basic maths (shortcuts, process of finding squares, cubes, square roots, cube roots), simplifications, approximations, ratios and proportions, simple and compound interests, percentages, averages, profit loss, time and distance, time and work, speed and distance, Mensuration etc. You should focus more on Mensuration and Simplifications as you will get up to 10 questions from these areas. There will be no question from Data Interpretation. As you know, time management plays a key role for this section. So you better avoid traditional problem solving methods as it may waste your time.

English Grammar :

The questions will be of basic English grammar. You should prepare antonyms, synonyms, prepositions, adverbs, usage of verbs, conjunctions, tenses, singular and plural, direct and indirect speech etc. You can prepare any basic English grammar book for this section. 

Reasoning & Mental Ability : 

The questions will be from basic reasoning topics. You should prepare blood relations, directions, Cubes and dice problems, basics of analogy, coding and decoding, alpha numeric symbol tests, comparisons (ranking test), Calenders, Statement and assumptions, statement and conclusion, series completion, seating arrangement, venn diagrams etc. There will be no questions from our banking non verbal reasoning but questions from traditional non verbal reasoning like cubes and dice problems. Refer to previous papers before starting your preparation. Focus more on basic reasoning concepts, prepare basic techniques and place values of alphabets. 

Paper 2 - Computer / Typing Test : 

This test is of 30 minutes. Usually this test consists of two parts. Those are 
  • Typing Test (15 minutes)
  • Data Entry (15 minutes). 
Your typing speed should be 30 words per minute (in English) and 25 words per minute (in Hindi). This is the basic speed. If you can access your computer to read this article then you can easily clear this test.

So no need to bother about it now. So first focus on the Paper 1.
