Solve problems related to Number Series in Examination

Sequence and Series

Sequence and Series problems just follow a particular pattern. Usually, series completion problems are asked in most of the quantitative aptitude exams. You just need to study the set relationship to complete the series. Once you recognize the pattern of the series, you will be able to solve the problem. 

Remember, Study the set relationship first

In quantitative aptitude exam, four or five options are given, to make the questions easy, always try to eliminate the options. This will help you to save your precious time. Coming to the point, I'm going to discuss some standard patterns of series. Go through these rules and try to solve the problems related to this.

Some standard patterns of series

Addition or Subtraction

Some number (or pattern of numbers) may be added or subtracted in each term to get the next term.

Example1: Study the following series and try to find the next term,

`3, 6, 9,12,15, ?`

Solution: This is very simple pattern. You can easily find that `3` is added to each term , and we are getting next term.

`3+ 3= 6`

`6+ 3= 9`

`9+ 3= 12`

Similarly, `15+ 3= 18`. So, `18` will the next term. 

Example2: Complete the following series

`4, 6, 9, 13, 18,?`

Solution: Pattern used in series:

`4+ 2= 6`

`6+ 3= 9`

`9+ 4= 13`

`13+ 5= 18`

Therefore, `18+ 6= 24`. So, `24` will be next term.

Example3: Study one more term and find the next term of series.

`13, 11, 9, 7, 5, ?`

Solution: As this is decreasing pattern, you can easily find that `2` is subtracted from each term to get the next term.

`13- 2= 11`

`11- 2= 9`

`9- 2= 7`

Similarly, `5- 2= 3`. So, `3` will be  the last term.

Multiplication or Division

Another pattern may be related to multiplication or division of some number to each term to get the next term.

Example4: Study the pattern of series and try to find next term

`4, 8, 24, 96,?`

Solution: A particular pattern of numbers is multiplied to each term of series

`4 times 2 = 8`

`8 times 3 = 24`

`24 times 4 = 96`

So, `96 times  5 = 480`. `480` will be the last term.

Example5: Complete the following series

`480, 96, 24, 8,?`

Solution: Study the pattern and note that it is a decreasing pattern and a particular series of number is divided from previous term

`480/ 5 = 96`

`96/ 4 = 24`

`24/3 = 8`

Continuing, `8/2= 4`. Therefore, `4` will be the next term.

Squaring or cubing

Another rules may be of squaring or cubing of the terms of series.

Example6: Complete the following series

`4,9,16,25,?`

Solution: This is a very simple pattern i.e. a square of some pattern of numbers

`2^2= 4`

`3^2= 9`

`4^2= 16`

`5^2= 25`

Continuing, `6^2= 36`. `36` is the next term.

Example7: Study the following series and try to complete

`1, 27, 125, 343,?`

Solution: The series is based on following pattern:

`1^3= 1`

`3^3= 27`

`5^3= 125`

`7^3= 343`

Continuing, `9^3= 729`, So, `729` will be the next term.

Mixed Patterns

In some questions, combination of above discussed patterns are used. For example, some number is multiplied with first term of series and then some other number is subtracted to get the next term. I will give you some examples for more understanding. Firstly try to solve it yourself.

Example8: Try to find the next term of following series:

`1, 2, 6, 21, 88,?`

Solution: Study this series, you will find out that more than one rule is applied on it. Following pattern is used in it:

`1 times 1 + 1 = 2`

`2 times 2 + 2 = 6`

`6 times 3 + 3 = 21`

`21 times 4 + 4 = 88`

Series `(1, 2, 3....)` multiplied to term and then same series is added to get the next term

Therefore, `88 times 5 + 5 = 445`. `445` is the next term.

Example9: Find the next term of following series:

`276, 140, 68, 36,?`

Solution: Following pattern is used in the series:

`276/2 +2 = 140` (Term is divided by `2` then added by `2`)

`140/2 -2 = 68` (Term is divided by`2` then subtracted by `2`)

`68/2 +2 = 36`

 Therefore, each term is divided by `2` then alternately added and subtracted by `2` to get the next term.

So `36/2 - 2 = 16`. `16` is the next term.

Thus, there are large number of techniques to form number of series. The only thing is the pattern of the series.

Number Series Shortcut Techniques for Postal Assistant Examination

A number series can be considered as a collection of numbers in which all the terms are formed according to some particular rule or all the terms follow a particular pattern. The relation of any term to its preceding term will be same through out the series.

You have to find out the rule in which the terms of the series are selected and depending on that rule you have to find out the missing number. There is no definite rule for the series. Generally the series can be of the following types. 

• Prime Series : IN which the terms are the prime numbers in Order
• Ex : 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, _ , 19
• Here the terms of the series are the prime numbers in order. The prime number after 13 is 17. So the answer to this question is 17.

• Alternate Primes : 
• Ex: 2, 5, 11, 17, 23, _, 41
• Here the series is framed by taking the alternative prime numbers. After 23, the prime numbers are 29 and 31. So the answer is 31.

• Every Third number can be the sum of the preceding two numbers:
• Ex : 3, 5, 8, 13, 21
• Here starting from third number
•  3 + 5 = 8
•  5 + 8 = 13
•  8 + 13 = 21
• So, the answer is 13 + 21 = 34

• Every Third number can be the product of the preceeding two numbers
• Ex : 1, 2, 2, 4, 8, 32. _
• Here starting from the third number
• 1 X 2 = 2
• 2 X 2 = 4
• 2 X 4 = 8 
• 4 X 8 = 32
• So, the answer is 8 X 32 = 256
• The difference of any term from its succeding term is constant (either increasing series or decreasing series :
• Ex : 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, _, 25
• Here the difference of any term from its succeding term is 3.
• 7 - 4 = 3
• 10 - 7 = 3
• So, the answer is 19 + 3 = 22

• The difference between two consecutive terms will be either increasing or decreasing by a constant number :
• Ex : 2, 10, 26, 50, 82, _
• Here, The difference between two consecutive terms are
• 10 - 2 = 8
• 26 - 10 = 16
• 50 - 26 = 24
• 82 - 50 = 32
• Here, the difference is increased by 8 (or you can say the multiples of 8). So the next difference will be 40 (32 + 8). So, the answer is 82 + 40 = 122
• Ex : 63, 48, 35, 24, 15, _
• Here, the difference between the two terms are
• 63 - 48 = 15
• 48 - 35 = 13
• 35 - 24 = 11
• 24 - 15 = 9
• Here, the difference is decreased by 2. So, the next difference will be 7. So, the answer is 15 - 7 = 8.

• The difference between two numbers can be multiplied by a constant number :
• Ex : 15, 16, 19, 28, 55, _
• Here, the differences between two numbers are
• 16 - 15 = 1
• 19 - 16 = 3
• 28 - 19 = 9
• 55 - 28 = 27
• Here, the difference is multiplied by 3. So, the next difference will be 81. So, the answer is 55 + 81 = 136

• The difference can be multiplied by numbers which will be increasing by a constant number :
• Ex : 2, 3, 5, 11, 35, _
• The difference between two numbers are
• 3 - 2 = 1
• 5 - 3 = 2
• 11 - 5 = 6
• 35 - 11 = 24
• Here, the differences are multiplied by numbers which are in increasing order.
• Differences are 
• 1
• 1 x 2 = 2
• 2 x 3 = 6
• 6 x 4 = 24
• So, the next difference will be 24 x 5 = 120. So, the answer is 35 + 120 = 155.

• Every succeeding term is got by multiplying the previous term by a constant number or numbers which follow a special pattern. 
• Ex : 5, 15, 45, 135, _
• Here, 5 x 3 = 15
• 15 x 3 = 45
• 45 x 3 = 135
• So, the answer is 135 x 3 = 405.
• Ex : 2, 10, 40, 120, 240, _
• Here, 2 x 5 = 10
• 10 x 4 = 40
• 40 x 3 = 120
• 120 x 2 = 240
• So, the answer is 240 x 1 = 240

• In certain series the terms are formed by various rule (miscellaneous rules). By keen observation you have to find out the rule and the appropriate answer.
• Ex : 4, 11, 31, 90, _
• Terms are,
• 4 x 3 - 1 = 11
• 11 x 3 - 2 = 31
• 31 x 3 - 3 = 90
• So, the answer will be 90 x 3 - 4 = 266
• Ex : 3, 5, 14, 55, _
• Terms are,
• 3 x 2 - 1 = 5
• 5 x 3 - 1 = 14
• 14 x 4 - 1 = 55
• So, the answer will be 55 x 5 - 1 = 274
• Ex : 3, 7, 23, 95, _
• Terms are,
• 3 x 2 + 1 = 7
• 7 x 3 + 2 = 23
• 23 x 4 + 3 = 95
• So, the answer will be 95 x 5 + 4 = 479
• Ex : 6, 17, 38, 79, _
• Terms are,
• 6 x 2 + 5 = 17
• 17 x 2 + 4 = 38
• 38 x 2 + 3 = 79
• So, the answer is 79 x 2 + 2 = 160

1) Draupadi Murmu sworn in as first Woman Governor of Jharkhand:

--> Draupadi Murmu has been sworn in as the first woman Governor of Jharkhand on 18 May 2015.

--> Ms Murmu succeeds Syed Ahmed, who will take over as the Governor of Manipur.

--> Jharkhand High Court Chief Justice Virendra Singh administered the oath of office to Ms Murmu.

2) India assumed presidency of World Health Assembly:

--> India assumed the presidency of the 68th World Health Assembly (WHA) held in Geneva after a gap of 19 years.

--> The 68th WHA session began on 18 May 2015 and it will conclude on 27 May 2015.

--> The WHA session is presided by Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda who is  also leading the high-level Indian delegation to the Assembly.

3) Aruna Shanbaug the face of "euthanasia" in India died at 66:

--> Aruna Shanbaug, a former nurse who lived in a coma state for the past 42 years after being brutally sexually assaulted at the KEM Hospital in Mumbai and became the face of the debate on euthanasia in India, died on 18 May 2015.

--> In March 2011, the Supreme Court rejected a petition filed by author Pinki Virani seeking euthanasia for Shanbaug.

4) Customers can now call STD mobile numbers without adding '0' or '+91' prefix:

--> A major roadblock to implementing full mobile number portability (MNP) across the country has been removed.

--> Several telecom operators have begun simplifying the process of dialling STD mobile numbers in the country.

--> Until now, calling mobile numbers registered and situated outside one's home network would require adding '0' or '+91' as a prefix.

--> Customers of most telecom operators can now call any mobile number in the country without adding any prefix.

--> This has come after operators implemented simplified dialling pattern.

5) Nelong Valley near China border opened for tourists after 53 years:

-->  Nelong Valley in Uttarakhand state was opened recently for tourists for the first time since the 1962 Indo-China war because of its proximity to the China border.

-->  Before the Indo-China war, the Nelong Valley was an important route for cross-border trade.

--> But the valley was closed for tourists and trade after the war and the aura of this beautiful valley went into oblivion. 

6) Federal Bank, SBI Cards joined hands for co-branded credit card:

--> Federal Bank on 18 May 2015 enetered into credit card segment through the launch of co-branded credit cards in partnership with SBI Cards, a leading credit card issuer.

--> In the first year, Federal Bank aims to issue as many as 1.5 lakh credit cards to its customers, Shyam Srinivasan, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer said.

7) BJP MP S.S. Ahluwalia to head joint panel on Land Acquisition Amendment bill:

--> Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) MP Surendrajeet Singh Ahluwalia has been appointed chairman of a Joint Committee of Parliament that will look into the provisions of the Land Acquisition Amendment Bill, 2015.

--> The joint committee will comprise of 30-members- 20 members from Lok Sabha and 10 from the Rajya Sabha.

--> The Committee will submit its report on the first day of the monsoon session.

8) New website of NITI Aayog launched:

--> Vice chairman of NITI Aayog Arvind Panagariya on 18 May 2015 launched the new website of the Aayog, almost five months after archiving the website of the erstwhile Planning Commission, a statement said.

--> The National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog replaced the Planning Commission on January 1, 2015.

-->  The beta version of the website, which can be accessed on http://www.niti.gov.in, provides details of the constitution, functions and current activities of the Aayog.

9) US president Barack Obama joined Twitter, again:

--> US president Barack Obama finally joined Twitter on 18 May 2015 with his official handle @POTUS towards the fag end of his second term.

--> While he used to be quite active on Twitter before being elected as the president in the first term via his personal handle @barackobama, his tweets dried up after his innings at the White House started.

Friends.. Postal/Sorting Assistant Exam is back in discussions again after a small gap. As we have already informed you, re-exam for Madhya Pradesh & Delhi Postal Circles has been announced. As you know it’s already a year had passed since the last notification which appeared in February 2014. Now as the re-exams have been announced after a long gap, many of you (circles in which re-exams are announced) might have forgot your Registration No. and Password to login to download the Admit Card/Hall Ticket. PA/SA Exam 2014: Re-Exam for Delhi Circle announced

Friends.. As you know the Postal/Sorting Assistant Examination 2014 held in Delhi Postal Circle on April 27, 2014 was already cancelled. For these many days, many have been awaiting the re-exam date and now the wait is over. The re-exam date for Delhi Circle has been announced and the re-exam will be held on March 22, 2015 in two shifts. The admit card can be downloaded from the below link.
