NEW DELHI: The number of cities where the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test 2017 will be held has been increased to 103 due to significant increase in the number of aspirants this year. In case the candidates want to change the option of city, they can do so between March 24 and March 27, 2017.

There will be additional 23 cities apart from the 80 existing examination cities this year. "The NEET examination, which is a medical entrance test conducted by the CBSE, got a better response. Therefore we have increased number of city centres," said HRD minister Prakash Javadekar.

NEET 2017 has registered a 41.42% jump in registration as 11.35 lakh aspirants have registered this year as against 8.02 lakh in 2016. The CBSE will conduct the eligibility test for the admissions to various medical and dental programmes offered by institutions across India. A mobile app has also been developed to help the candidates, who are expected to take the test to locate the nearest test venue.

The 23 new centres include Guntur and Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh, Anand, Bhavnagar and Gandhi Nagar in Gujarat, Davangiri, Mysore, Hubli and Udupi in Karnataaka, Kannur and Thrissur in Kerala, Ahmednagar, Amravati, Kolhapur and Satara in Maharashtra, Amritsar, Jodhpur, Namakkal and Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu, Gorakhpur and Howarh.

With this, NEET will also be having an equivalent number of centre cities as in JEE (Main) examination. The single common entrance exam for admission in medical colleges of India will be held on May 7.

"Earlier it was conducted in 80 cities. Now we have increased to 103 cities with more than 2,200 centres and the new choice to the students for selection of nearby cities have been given. The exams are being conducted under the Health Ministry guidelines," the HRD minister said. Students can register on CBSE website and select new centre from the centres available in 23 new cities.

NEET, the single common entrance exam for admission to MBBS/ BDS courses in Medical Council of India/ Dental Council of India approved medical/ dental colleges, will be held on May 7 in 10 languages — Hindi, English, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Oriya and Kannada.

Health Minister JP Nadda said: "We have also included regional languages in the test. CBSE has agreed for this and accordingly the number of examination centres have also been increased."

You can now appear for NEET in Odia

The Centre on Tuesday gave in to the state government's demand and has decided to conduct the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for undergraduate medical admissions (NEET-UG) in Odia. The decision was conveyed to the state during the course of a video-conferencing between state health department officials and their central counterparts, a senior government official said.

"We were told that the Central Board of Secondary Education has already been instructed to include Odia as a medium for NEET. A notification will be issued by the Centre soon," the official added.

Sources said apart from Odia, Kannada too was included in the list. This takes the number of regional languages in which the national-level test will be held to eight, apart from Hindi and English. Students willing to take the test in Odia will have to specifically mention it while filing up their application forms.

On December 21, the Union ministry of health and family welfare had announced its decision to host this year's NEET-UG in Hindi, English, Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali, Assamese, Telugu and Tamil.

The NEET 2017 date was scheduled to be notified in the last week of December, but it got delayed because of the language issue. The CBSE is expected to issue the time-line for application and entrance test soon.

Soon after the directive, the Odisha and Karnataka governments pressed the Centre for inclusion of the native languages. On December 22, chief minister Naveen Patnaik wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his intervention in the matter. Four days later, petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan too wrote to health minister J P Nadda seeking the inclusion of Odia.

In an unrelated development, the state has sought clarification from the Centre as to who will be conducting the counselling for medical/dental admission in deemed universities.

"Till last year, the deemed universities used to conduct their own pre-admission tests and counselling. Since NEET has been made mandatory for all institutions from this year, we want a clarity on how their counselling will be done," a government official said.

Medical entrance test NEET to be held in 8 languages

NEW DELHI: The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admission in medical colleges will be held in eight languages- Hindi, English, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu- for the academic year 2017-18.

Also, the candidate qualifying NEET will be eligible for all India quota and other quotas under the state governments and institutes irrespective of the medium taken by candidates, subject to other eligibility criteria, the Union health ministry said in a statement.

In May, Union health minister JP Nadda had held a meeting with the health ministers and health secretaries of 18 states/Union Territories towards implementation of NEET across states.

Joint secretary, Medical Education, AK Singhal said, "The collaborative efforts of Central health ministry with the state health ministries have lead to this decision so as to bring parity for the students who have taken the state board exams."

NEET has replaced AIPMT and has been made mandatory for admissions in all-India medical/dental colleges which means no other state can conduct its separate medical entrance.
