1) Election Commission announced assembly polls date: Haryana, Maharashtra to vote on October 15: The election Commission on Friday announced the assembly elections date for Haryana and Maharashtra. Chief Election Commissioner V.S. Sampath made the big announcement during a press conference that both Haryana and Maharashtra will elect new assemblies in single phase on October 15 and the results will be declared on October 19. "Model Code of Conduct comes into effect immediately" the CEC said adding "as per SC orders, Commission has made provision for NOTA in EVMs." 

2) Rohan Bopanna to receive Davis Cup Commitment Award: Indian tennis star Rohan Bopanna will be awarded the Davis Cup Commitment Award in Bangalore on 13 Sep 2014 on the sidelines of the ongoing World Group play-off tie against Serbia, it was announced by International Tennis Federation (ITF). The ITF through its national associations, will present Davis Cup Commitment Awards during this weekend’s 2014 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group and zone group ties. Besides Bopanna, former Grand Slam tennis champions Lleyton Hewitt of Australia and Gustavo Kuerten of Brazil will also be presented the award after their respective games.

3) Environment Minister launched online portal for zoos: Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Prakash Javadekar on Friday launched an online portal for grant of recognition to zoos and monitoring of zoos. He also launched an E- archival and retrieval management system for the Central Zoo Authority and a book on “Zoos in India 2014,” an official statement said.

4) V Krishna Murthy award conferred on Nandan Nilekani: Nandan Nilekani, the former Chairman of Unique Identification Authority of India (UDAI), has been conferred with V Krishna Murthy Award for Excellence. The former CEO of Infosys received the award from Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah on Friday at the Centre for Organisation Development (COD). Krishna Murthy was instrumental in turning around public sector giants BHEL and SAIL. He also helped Maruti to make a mark in the automobile sector.
